Where do the pellet ashes collect?
Ashes collect in the boiler. For this reason, the boiler must be cleaned out more regularly than when firing on oil. Boilers are supposed to be cleaned once a season when being fired on oil. Wood pellets are a less refined fuel [than #2 heating oil], and do burn leaving more ashen content behind (less than 1% ash for premium pellets). As ash builds in the heat exchanger surfaces of the boiler, efficiency drops and stack temperature rises. Typical usage will see the need to clean a boiler converted from oil once for every three to four tons of pellets burned depending on your particular boiler. This cleaning consists of the removal of heavy ash from the firebox and brushing the heat exchanger to remove fly-ash; it is accomplished by our certified installation and maintenance technicians.
